The damage it causes has been widespread in many parts of the world. It takes nutrients away from soils, slows the growth of trees, and makes lakes uninhabitable for fish. In cities, it rusts almost everything it touches. The problem begins with the pollutants from the burning of fossil fuels and from certain kinds of manufacturing. These pollutants react with water in the air and reach high into the atmosphere. They travel with the wind for hundreds of miles, and eventually return to the ground in the form of water.

Most parents would be surprised to learn this. They don’t ever realize that this is happening. So why do they do it? Interestingly, it begins when the children are newborn babies. It is a known fact that at birth, males are a little less developed than females are. They don’t make noises as much as girls do, and they don’t have as much eye contact. Female babies make noises, look at their parents, and remain alert longer. The results? Parents respond by talking more to the baby girls, who seem to be paying attention and “talking” back to them.

During World War II, the U.S. Marines had a difficult problem. They had to find a way to keep their communication secrets. Japan kept breaking the U.S. codes. They knew their enemy’s plan, so they had time to prepare.
The Americans became desperate as the Japanese broke code after code. Then Philip Johnson went to the Marines. He had an idea. Johnson had grown up on a Navajo reservation. He knew the Navajo language, and he knew it was very hard to learn. Fewer than 30 non-Navajos knew it. None of them were Japanese. Johnson thought Navajo could work well as a code. However, the Marine officer was not sure about Johnson’s idea. Even so, he agreed to give it a try. The Marines had to try something.
Johnson set up a test. He showed what could be done in 20 seconds. The Navajos could encode, transmit, and decode a three-line message. The officer was impressed. He brought in two code breakers. They didn’t even know how to write down what they were hearing. Trying to translate it was impossible. The Navajo “code talkers” had a job. The officer ordered 200 Navajos to be trained for code-talking duty.
